Who created chess?

I once heard that chess was created to represent a significant battle, but I have also heard that the game chess was invented by some priests/sears; to tell how a member of a royal family died. (hint: he died of exhaustion surrounded by enemy forces).
Chess was not created. It envolved.

Maybe you can say that chess as we know it was "created" when the bishop and queen were created (replacing the old Fers and Alfil) and pawns were allowed to move two squares. But even then, rules regarding draws, promotion, castling and en passant were far from unified
