What if the pieces had names like pawn, paladin, priest, pillar, prince and prince's papa
You forgot pawnee and pony ...
@e4e5f4exf4nicht thats how you can sort out the pessimists from the optimists. Horsey and ponies. The optimist thinks cute girls, the pessimists knows little kids. Joke
Plowman, Forfender,Majesty,Sorcerer,Cavalier,Empress.
Funny! Solution: Long algebraic; like e2-e4, g8-f6. I actually owned a chess machine in the past that used that type of notation.
wow that is really cool

What has algebraic notation have to do with chess and especially with piece names as it is with the current system the ones you mentioned are just different names and wouldn't change the way we use the system e.g Instead of saying Bishop to a5 (ba5) we would say priest to a5 (Pa5)
In international correspondence chess they used a numerical notation so as to avoid language dependent prefixies for the pieces or other alphabets. It went like
5254 5755 7163 2836 6425 1716
5254 5755 7163 2836 6425 1716
How about pawn, paladin, padre, palace, patriarch and patriarch's wife
