Protecting any more than he's protected other players, like Nilsen? I think not. The only reason Rensch went after Niemann after letting Niemann play on Chesscon over the past two years, is because Rensch's new business partner, Magnus Carlsen, made an unsupported otb cheating claim against Niemann. It looks like Danny's motivation is to give cover to Carlsen's unsupported claim of otb cheating by blowing smoke to cloud Magnus' problem of a lack of proof that Niemann cheated otb.
Carlsen, Nakamura, So, Rensch and several others are looking like petty corporate tyrants circling the wagons to protect their business interests in the face of little boy Magnus' tantrum over losing an otb game in St. Louis. Collectively, they're making chess into an international laughingstock.
