Rite of Passage

What are rites of passage in chess that take you to the next level?
Winning the U.S. Championship 11-0 :)

But in seriousness there are unlimited achievements, any tournament victory is a rite of passage. Every new class that you reach (C player, B player, A and so on), every achievement or milestone you achieve one.

A high tournament performance? That counts. Winning the first game against mom or dad? Also counts.
My rite of passage into the elite is to cross the 2400 barrier.
Reviewing my tournament games at home showed a lot of missed opportunities. Missed opportunities by myself and my opponent. Doing that made tournaments much lower pressure. In a sense the tournament isn't over until the reviews are done. Doesn't have to be the same day, fit it into your schedule when you can.
In OTB chess it would be winning your section at a tournament. So if there's an Under 1400 section, coming in first at a couple of those would mean you're ready for the next section up. Then you keep working at it and maybe you come in first in the Under 1800 section and are ready for the Under 2200, after that the Open section, after that the various FIDE titles (CM, FM, IM, GM), after that you go and win the Candidates tournament, after that you beat Magnus Carlsen, and after that you beat Alpha Zero; Stockfish; and Leela, and after that you beat God, and then after that you destroy the universe because there's no point in anyone existing if they can't beat you in chess!
