I had to look up NM; it means National Master, a rank assigned by the US Chess Federation.
That means NM is in fact a Master, you can tell by the name.

I agree that NM is a master and should have a title. CM isn't a master and shouldn't have a title.
@Thaxiss Officially, yes
@jonesmh The US CM title definitely should not exist. The FIDE CM title is equivalent to US NM title
@succ67 NM stands for Not Master, so I agree, as does the name of the title.
I think it's a bit silly to give a title to someone who has yet to achieve mastery. A CM is a CANDIDATE for the master title - like a candidate in an exam, he hasn't passed yet. Ain't got that passing grade baby. Do apprentice magicians get fancy letters after their name? :) Harry Potter AM. No lol. Do students in medical school get to sign their letters CMD? :) The whole point of a title is it denotes mastery of chess. A CM is a sub-master level chess player who has somehow been given a title :) Surely it has nothing to do with the fact that FIDE can charge him fees to register his title :) Hi, I'm a candidate queen. Not queen yet, might never be, but call me your royal highness :)
@Aceno0b This is the best comment I have ever seen. No apprentice magicians
