Usually, when I'm white, I lose a lot less than I win, whereas if I'm black, I lose a lot more (Although I do win sometimes). So is chess fair this way?
No of course not.
That's why we alternate turns as white / black.
I have a better score with black than white. So in my specific case, no. (GM Suba also claimed that black was OK.) The games of most GMs have shown that white does have a higher winning percentage. Below 2000, the advantage is not statistical significant.
Fear of playing black, can be a fatal flaw in chess. :]
