Is Chess an Actual sport?

I started wondering to myself is Chess an actually recognized sport? poker is if you go to professional poker players info it says they are an athlete but are chess players the same? i went to a local betting place and i wanted to but a bet on the world championship match and they said no Chess is not a sport so is chess a sport? i know it has a chess Olympics yet why is it not been able to be made bets on like local sports are?
It's ratification.. The reason people think it's not a sport is because it has never had popular spectating to the point that other "Sports" have. Some people believe that you have to have some form of exercise to be a sport, but that is refuted by your comment that a card game is considered a sport. The truth of the matter is a sport is really only defined as:
-------------------------------

sport
[spôrt]

NOUN
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
"team sports such as baseball and soccer" · [more]
synonyms:
(competitive) game(s) · physical recreation · physical activity · [more]

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Until recently physical exertion has been played off as anything that you move a lot in. And recently people have been arguing that games like chess can have "physical exertion" if played at the competitive level. This is why FIDE has been trying to get policies in place that attempt to stop enhancements. They want to get chess introduced into the mainstream Olympics. And things like drug testing and observation of enhancements were never policed before. They believe if this were integrated into their policies, we might have a successful application to main stream Olympics thus grating an official claim to being a sport.
Chess is recognized by the IOC as a sport.
IMPO, chess is only a game.
It depends how you define "sport". While some definitions of sport would only require that it is an organized competitive activity, other definitions might require that some level of physical activity or physical talent is required.
It definitely is a sport albeit a mental sport but i still consider it a sport none the less.
@AnatolijKasparov i went to Phil Helmuth facebook page and it said he was an athlete so yea you can consider it a sport biased on the title
@Chessy64 cause everybody know the. Helmut is a reasonably person.
Chess and poker are games. Or we can do like e-sports (electronic games, which in high competition self call like it), and say that high level chess and poker are b-sports aka board-sports
