IMO, theory is mostly important in OTB games or online leagues where your opponent can actually prepare so theory has a bigger effect on the game. Knowing the opening principles and objectives is definitely important though. But you don't need to worry about theory so much because random pools and people can't really prepare in random pairings... @lagaresy15
