How do you calculate this line? (Rook lift to defend, not attack)

So on move 15, I played Qe3 to check on g5. What should white be thinking in this position to at least not do this? The engine line shows trading queens with the queen's rook doing the lift. I would never have considered that.

At move 15, I would of thought I was winning.
I would of scanned the position and came to the conclusion I don’t see a killer move for white.

Thus, my plan would of been to retreat + regroup + attack other stuff.
I would of moved the DSB to d2.

Black Rook is attacking Dark Bishop.
Black Light Bishop is attacking my c4 pawn making my Queen babysit
White Knight on b1 isn’t doing anything
White Rook on a1 isn’t doing anything
I would if took steps to fix those things.
Thank you for your comments. Yes, I thought I was winning and yes I didn't see a killer move for white. Instead of retreating and regrouping I went in for the kill with the queen move. How can white know not to do this in the future?
