The 5 things I do before a tournament

That was a really good post
Thank you! I will use this as a guide

(p.s. my next OTB tournament is in one hour)

Good luck!

Very sound observations/advice from long practice. I especially appreciated the validation of the best practice of "being hungry" right before a tournament, rather than cramming for it like it's a midterm exam.

Next one up for me is in November.
Hope it helps for your event.

"plenty are still a fight at move 30"

  • Look e.g. at the ongoing European Team Championship. Many go down to zero on move 30 as I recommend.

"simply at a time and practical disadvantage" * But a board disadvantage is worse than a time disadvantage.

"I've struggled with time management" * Maybe you get anxious in time trouble? Once you start thinking about the clock and not about the board your ability degrades. Maybe play some 1+0 bullet to gain confidence?

"having 30 minutes left at 30 moves in a 90+30 game is an achievement" * Against lower rated players that is OK, but against equal or higher rated players the one who uses more time is more likely to get a winning position.

Nice to see you writing again after 2 years.

About things which I do before a tournament, I wrote a month ago about on my blog. It is very different to your article and definitely requires more time.

Long time Brabo! Yes, your posts are more detailed than posts like this one. I played 2 tournaments in India in 2012 as a FM and managed to do well, but it's far more scary to play there now!
I think we had this kind of conversation 2 years ago, but with the amount of quality blog posts you have, you already have readymade scripts for potential content in other formats like voice/podcast for example that can help more chessplayers too.

about the time management part i think it depends on game to game opponent to opponent and player to player it also largely is decided by the nature of the position and outcome of the opening so i think no hard fast rule to be followed
But in general a good artical and ofc nice to see you back at writing
Thanks Hrithika, yes it does depend, just I've struggled with time trouble chronically so thought I'd include a line touching on something I can keep aspiring to (and maybe remind others with the same issue).

Even if you lose two games in a row, you’re planting seeds every step of your journey as a chessplayer.

what you plant is also important, in general, leafy greens like lettuce and kale with watering cycles of 1-2x/wk take around 6 wks to mature before a player can harvest and consume them for chess benefits

microgreens on the other hand are just as nutritious with a harvest time in 1-1.5 wks, but require maintenance almost daily

Very interesting advice indeed, thanks
