Same for me.
Started playing at 39 and I'm 41 now:

  • 1900 classical
  • 1900 rapid
  • 1700 blitz
  • 1400 bullet

I am the adult improover from your article. Playing chess in childhood in 80th with my father until I got 12. I didn't play one tournament. But I liked chess and watch some top games in websites. In 2021 Nov I decided to study chess seriously. ( I was 40+ years old). Find a coach ( 2 times younger then me NM).

And what I found - I got troubles in short controls. The shorter time I playing - the lower rating I have.

You can see it in my lichess Rating. I have got Rapid rating 2400 by playing 15+10. Ruined it to 2100 by participating in 10+0.

In Blitz I hv 2000 strength when playing 3+0. 2100-2150 when playing 3+2 and almoust 2300 when playing 5+3

In OTB I hv ~1800 stand 1750 Rpd (my rating grows up in 15+10 and falls down when 10+5) and 1500 blz (I lost on time very much. Kids often flaggs me :( )

What I am trying to do? I try to solve puzzle storms. Pattern recognition. And simple tactics from books. But this doesn't help much. When I grow in blitz - I also grow in Classic. :)

But I proceed working And hope I can reach CM level one day.
