About me
Hi! I'm FIDE Candidate Master Joseph Wan. I graduated in 2024 from Vanderbilt University with degrees in psychology, MHS, and Asian Studies. I started playing chess when I was 6 years old, and my love and passion of the game has only grown since. My goal in coaching is to share that passion with others, and pass on what I've learned over my almost 20 years of playing this game!

Other experiences
I was the captain of the championship winning Iowa team in the 2022 States Chess Cup, where we [Iowa] defeated Virginia 9-7 in the finals. I also captained the teams "dreamy knights" and "shadow knights" in ICC's former 4545 league, winning championships in seasons 92, 94, 97, and 98.
Outside of chess, I'm an avid piano and violin player. I was Iowa State Champion (2017) in piano, Iowa City Champion (2020), as well as an Iowa All-State Orchestra member on violin (2018 and 2019). My chess skills also transferred well to the mobile game Clash Royale. At my peak season I was ranked #4016 in the world; since the introduction of the Path of Legends, my peak medals has been 2128. If you would like coaching in Clash Royale as well, feel free to reach out!

Best skills
My expertise in openings is in 1. e4 with White, and 1... e6 with Black, against everything. My unique skill is my intuition. I have never really used Chessable, or squeezed moves into memory. I love the complexity of the game, and the logic of choosing correct moves.
Hard work is necessary to improve yourself and reach the highest echelons of chess you wish to reach, no doubt. However, what sets me apart from other coaches is my desire to not only help you improve your chess, but to have fun while doing it. I encourage my students to be the best they can be, but also not to put too much pressure on themselves, and enjoy the process. I believe this is the best way to cultivate growth not only in chess, but in life as well.
