About me

I am a FIDE Master from Colombia with many years of experience as both a competitive chess player and coach. I have won several national and international tournaments, including the Pan-American U17 Championship and the Central American and Caribbean U17 Championship.

I currently work as a professional chess coach, teaching students of different ages and levels. My goal is to help each student understand chess more deeply, improve their decision-making, and develop a structured thinking process rather than simply memorize moves.

As a player, I have competed against strong titled players and represented my region in major national events. As a coach, I enjoy combining game analysis, tactical training, strategic concepts, openings, and practical play according to each student's individual needs.

I believe that every student can improve with the right training plan, consistency, and guidance.

Playing experience

I have been playing competitive chess for many years and hold the FIDE Master (FM) title.

Some of my most notable achievements include winning the Pan-American U17 Championship and the Central American and Caribbean U17 Championship in 2009, as well as finishing third in the Central American and Caribbean U20 Championship in 2011.

I have won several regional and national tournaments in Colombia and have represented Caquetá at the Colombian National Games.

Throughout my career, I have competed against many strong titled players, including International Masters and Grandmasters. One of my notable recent results was defeating GM Leandro Krysa (2535) at the 2024 Continental Chess Championship of the Americas in Medellín.

I continue to compete actively while working toward further improvement as a player.

Teaching experience

I have been working as a professional chess coach with Silver Knights / Magnus Chess Academy in the United States.

I teach students of different ages and skill levels, from beginners learning the fundamentals to experienced tournament players. My experience includes private lessons, group classes, chess camps, tournament preparation, game analysis, and structured training programs.

In my lessons, I focus on helping students understand the reasons behind their moves. I work extensively with tactical training, calculation, positional understanding, opening preparation, endgames, and analysis of the student's own games.

I also create personalized study plans based on each student's strengths, weaknesses, playing style, and competitive goals. My objective is not only to make my students stronger players, but also to help them become more independent thinkers at the chessboard.

Other experiences

In addition to my competitive and coaching experience, I have worked extensively with online chess platforms and digital training tools, allowing me to teach students from different countries and backgrounds.

I have experience preparing training materials, analyzing tournament games, creating personalized study plans, and helping students develop effective training routines between lessons.

I am a native Spanish speaker and I also teach chess in English, which allows me to work with both Spanish- and English-speaking students.

Chess has been an important part of my life for many years, and I enjoy sharing my experience as both a competitive player and a coach with students who are serious about improving.

Best skills

My main strengths are tactical vision, calculation, attacking play, and practical decision-making.

As a coach, one of my strongest skills is identifying the specific areas that are holding a student back and creating a clear training plan to address them. I particularly enjoy analyzing students' games, finding recurring mistakes, and turning those mistakes into practical lessons.

I also focus on helping students improve their thinking process, pattern recognition, calculation, positional understanding, and confidence during tournament games.

I adapt my teaching style to each student's level, goals, and personality. My goal is to make complex chess concepts easier to understand and, most importantly, applicable in real games.

Teaching methodology

My teaching methodology is based on understanding each student's individual needs. I begin by analyzing their games to identify strengths, weaknesses, recurring mistakes, and areas that need improvement.

Lessons combine game analysis, calculation exercises, tactical patterns, positional concepts, endgames, and opening preparation. I believe students improve faster when they understand why a move works rather than simply memorizing variations.

I also emphasize practical training. Students are encouraged to play regularly, solve puzzles, and apply what we study in real games. Their games then become the foundation for future lessons.

For students who train with me regularly, I can create a personalized study plan with specific goals and exercises. My objective is to develop stronger, more independent players who can think clearly and make better decisions over the board.
