  1. Rolihlahla hi Scarff :-)
  2. Silkthewanderer Go glbert
  3. Saturnitus Go Eric!
  4. Rolihlahla hi Saturnitus :-)
  5. Rolihlahla hi Captain :-)
  6. mkubecek (8.Nc3) Hi :-)
  7. Rolihlahla i think we are still in book - but i'm never 100% sure after move 2 :-)
  8. Rolihlahla Bxc4 - not sure what he is thinking about ....
  9. Silkthewanderer Nxc4 is a move
  10. Rolihlahla was thinking 10. ... Qa5 there
  11. Rolihlahla but want to develop first ....
  12. Silkthewanderer It would be great if Nxf7 worked but I see no way for that
  13. Silkthewanderer Same after Bf4 and Nf6... Nxf7 seems to just barely not work
  14. Rolihlahla did not expect that ...
  15. Silkthewanderer Okay, interesting. Let’s see what I missed
  16. Silkthewanderer Basically my assumption is that Nf6 holds everything
  17. mkubecek (13.Qb3+) Kf8 should be just fine, IMHO
  18. Rolihlahla hey Kjar :-)
  19. Kjar Hello hello :-)
  20. mkubecek (13...Kf8) Rather expected something like Qf3+ or Qh5+ with Bg5.
  21. Silkthewanderer I think Qb3 is a good square for the Queen. The only problem is that there isn't really another piece joining
  22. mkubecek (14.Re1) Nf6 still looks like a good plan. White can try Bg5 but he does not really want to trade on f6.
  23. Silkthewanderer Ah. 14. ...Nf6 15. g4 could be an idea
  24. mkubecek (14...Nf6) Hm... Nf6 g4 Bxh2+ might be fun. (Did not calculate it through, though.)
  25. Silkthewanderer That would lose because White gets a Ba3 check when you are done
  26. Silkthewanderer 15. Ba3 is the move with which you hope to make a draw. But I assume glbert had ambitious intent
  27. mkubecek (14...Nf6) Maybe Qe6+ instead of Nxg4+...
  28. mkubecek (14...Nf6) Ah, Ba3, not Qa3. :-(
  29. mkubecek (14...Nf6) And how about simple g4 Nxg4?
  30. Rolihlahla Bg5 and I'm think Greek gift
  31. mkubecek (15.Bg5) Better not... There is no clear threat after Kh1, AFAICS.
  32. glbert that was a dumb move.
  33. Silkthewanderer Bxh2 Kxh2 Ng4 Kg3 Qxg5 Qb4+ is something that might refute
  34. Silkthewanderer Well, not refute. Possibly lead to perpetual
  35. Rolihlahla if he doesn't take on h2 - seems like he has a good attack
  36. Silkthewanderer Well... with Bxf6 White is looking for tactics I assume
  37. Silkthewanderer Defending R against bishop pair is an absolute nightmare in any endgame
  38. mkubecek (17...gxf6) Yeah, once the other bishop gets out, white is in a lot of trouble.
  39. mkubecek (17...gxf6) g3 wouldn't be a good idea now.
  40. Silkthewanderer Bxh2 there feels dubious to me. Finishing development seemed more important
  41. Kjar Is Re8+ any good, I am curious...
  42. Silkthewanderer I think the king escapes after Re8 Ke8 Qg8 Kd7 Qf7 Kd6
  43. Kjar Re8 Ke8 Qg8 Kd7 Re1?
  44. mkubecek (17...gxf6) Maybe Re8+ Kxe8 Re1+ then Qf7+ or Qg8+
  45. Silkthewanderer You need Qg8 first or the king goes back to f8
  46. mkubecek (17...gxf6) And Qb4+ does not work any more because of c5 or Bd6 (or even Qd6).
  47. glbert i kind of want to play Re8.
  48. Silkthewanderer Kjars line might suffice for a draw I think
  49. Silkthewanderer So far I found nothing better for Black than Re8 Ke8 Qg8 Kd7 Re1 Be5
  50. Silkthewanderer Originally I discarded the line because of Re1 Kd6 but then c4 is trouble
  51. glbert it's not even close to working though.
  52. Kjar Be5 de fe Qg7+ and a perpetual on 7th and 8th ranks? Cause Kd6 Qxe5+ and white wins?
  53. mkubecek (17...gxf6) Qxe5+?
  54. mkubecek (17...gxf6) From where?
  55. jcarmody (18.Re8+) Yay!
  56. Silkthewanderer Oh, Black can also play Re1 Kd6 and that is also a perpetual
  57. Kjar Re8+ Kxe8 Qg8+ Kd7 Re1 Be5 de fe Qg7+ Kd8 Qg8+ Kd7 Qg7+ =?
  58. Silkthewanderer Re1 Kd6 c4 c5 d5 Be5 wouldn't win
  59. mkubecek (18.Re8+) Ah, I finally understood what does "de fe" mean. :-)
  60. Kjar It is simple for black here in the way that now you just go in and see how it works out...
  61. Silkthewanderer There is also Re8 Ke8 Qg8 Kd7 Qf7 and that is also looking like a perpetual very soon
  62. Kjar Doesn't seem like there are any viable alternative to KxR
  63. mkubecek (18.Re8+) I don't know...
  64. Silkthewanderer Kg7 Qg8 Kh6 looks super sketchy but I don't see an immediate refutation
  65. mkubecek (18.Re8+) Kg7 Qg8+ Kh6and what then?
  66. mkubecek (18.Re8+) ...or Rg8+ Kh6
  67. Silkthewanderer Ah wait, Black isn't up any material yet so that makes no sense
  68. mkubecek (18.Re8+) Maybe ... Kh6 Rae1 with threat of R1e7
  69. Kjar Yeah, then black king is on h6, material is equal, g3 catches the bishop, the c8 bishop never develops due to a rook hanging
  70. Kjar Not taking the rook almost certainly loses ans taking the rook maybe loses and probably draws and unlikely but who knows wins
  71. Kjar Just based on this risk assessment, I guess, you take
  72. glbert black can't seriously contemplate Kg7, right?
  73. Silkthewanderer Especially since you might need to think later on
  74. glbert so i guess rolihlahla is from the school of calculating everything before moving.
  75. Silkthewanderer Most likely this ends in a perpetual somewhere but there are some things White could try first and you might need these minutes later
  76. glbert weak
  77. Silkthewanderer Wait... dumb question. Is ...c6 actually winning?
  78. mkubecek (20.Re1) How about Qd8 now? Qe6+ Kc7
  79. Kjar Seeing Be5 is also not super straightforward too btw
  80. Kjar Qd6 or Qd8 I guess loses to Qf7+ and Re6 or Re8 then
  81. mkubecek (20.Re1) OK, Qxh7+ Kd6 Qxh2+ I guess
  82. Silkthewanderer Qd8 Qf7 Kd6 Re8 was the one that scared me
  83. Kjar Qf8+ Kd5 Qc5#
  84. mkubecek (20...Kd6) Qxf7?
  85. mkubecek (20...Kd6) no
  86. jcarmody gg
  87. mkubecek Sigh...
  88. Saturnitus Gg
  89. Rolihlahla well played
  90. Rolihlahla You attacked well
  91. glbert Re8+ did actually work?
  92. glbert hard to believe.
  93. mkubecek Hm... SF actually prefers 20... Qd8, have to look into that.
  94. glbert well played, Rolihlahla.
  95. mkubecek ...and Qxh7+ Kd6 Qxh2+ as the continuation. At least something I got right. :-)
  96. Kjar oh painful lines...
  97. glbert i found nothing after Re8+ Kxe8 Qg8+ Ke7 for some reason.
  98. mkubecek I was thinking about Ke7 at that moment but black played Kd7 too soon so I didn't get anywhere.
  99. Rolihlahla i considered Kg7 but that looked worse - and I think i was losing my Q in that line
  100. Rolihlahla Ke7 allowed Re1+
  101. Rolihlahla i never would have come up with Qd8 ....
  102. Rolihlahla to keep the game going .....
  103. Rolihlahla sorry guys - i'm in bad form lately .... just have to play through it i guess
  104. mkubecek Been there... we all have...
  105. glbert this still makes no sense on principle to me.
  106. glbert i saw that this was difficult to defend, but white actually being slightly better according to sf? smh.
  107. glbert 18.Re8+ is supposedly the only move that keeps a positive eval.
