  1. IM lovlas Im thinking h5
  2. IM lovlas after g5 my king is permanently safe on g8 unless there is some Bf3 Bxh5 funky business. But that cant ever work
  3. IM lovlas g5 I go e6 Nge7 b6 or b5, d5 in some manner and 0-0
  4. IM lovlas I could add h4 but it prolly doesnt make much sense here
  5. IM lovlas its just a target since my king belongs on g8
  6. IM lovlas lets just play simple chess until something happens
  7. IM lovlas Nge2 I prolly go Nd4 to stop d4
  8. IM lovlas not that d4 is the end of the world
  9. IM lovlas but why allow it when you can stop it
  10. Silkthewanderer e6 and Ne7 only after Bh6 is prevented. This Lovlas guy knows the basics.
  11. Silkthewanderer For the record, yes 9. Nge7 d4 was my idea.
  12. IM lovlas I dont really see white castling long here. But its probably on option. But I would be worried about b5-b4 and the monster bishop on g7
  13. IM lovlas I should gotto make sure that e5 doesnt win anything on b5. But I dont think thats the case after Ne7
  14. IM lovlas Nd1 is kinda thematic i guess
  15. IM lovlas white wants to go c3 and d4
  16. Silkthewanderer The thematic move would have been Nxe2 but I think the pawn sacrifice Nxe2 Back would have given me chances.
  17. IM lovlas I kinda want to keep pieces on the board so maybe I just go b5 c3 Ndc6
  18. Silkthewanderer Nd1 and c3 is absolutely a Standard plan in the Closed Sicilian. Not sure about it here but what else to do
  19. IM lovlas im not sure whats going on after e5 tbh. I tried to work it out
  20. IM lovlas e5 Rb8 Nxd4 cxd Bxd4 dxe must be ok for black I think
  21. IM lovlas I can prolly also play d5 if I have to
  22. IM lovlas e5 d5 Nxd cxd Bxd Nc6 regains the pawn
  23. IM lovlas no wait Qe3
  24. IM lovlas ah well there is Nxd4 Qxd4 Qc7 with a fork on e5 and c2 so it can be that terrible
  25. StalematE008 Hi
  26. IM lovlas ok so now we have a choice. Ndc6 or Nxe2
  27. Silkthewanderer 12. e5 seems like such an interesting move. Unfortunately it just doesn't do anything.
  28. IM lovlas tbh I think Nxe2 is the most sensible. It frees the c6 square for the other knight
  29. IM lovlas but it does exchange of a piece
  30. IM lovlas this it he way
  31. IM lovlas I might regret this. But it does seem like the most sensible approach
  32. IM lovlas I dont think I'm ever worse here. f5 is well guarded. I have easy development and decent pieces
  33. IM lovlas i'm not afraid yet
  34. IM lovlas maybe i should long castle play d5, dxe and take the open d-file
  35. IM lovlas its so risky though
  36. IM lovlas why not just short castle
  37. IM lovlas or Rd8 to start with maybe
  38. Silkthewanderer Please tell me where you intend to place your king, kind Sir.
  39. IM lovlas im slightly worried about Nf2-h1-g3 and then sacking something on h5. But it can never really work
  40. IM lovlas but its always scary
  41. Silkthewanderer I mean, I am going to try f5 in any case but I need to know how to delude myself into believing in it.
  42. IM lovlas I gotto keep an eye out for f5 stuff as well
  43. IM lovlas for now i have it covered I think. Unless he is gonna go ham
  44. IM lovlas so he wants to go Ne3 and play f5 in some way
  45. IM lovlas its prolly time to go d5
  46. IM lovlas I should play somewhat fast and confidently to put pressure on him
  47. IM lovlas but also I need to spend enough time to not lose to f5 stuff
  48. IM lovlas as a principle when your opponent is attacking you on the flanks you want to open the centre. So I'm thinking d5 Ne3 c4 is very logical.
  49. IM lovlas but its also very risky
  50. IM lovlas since it allows a lot of various captures and also f5 at any point
  51. IM lovlas I'm not confident my position is as good as I thought anymore tbh
  52. IM lovlas at least I have to thread carefully
  53. IM lovlas Bd2 might have been clever
  54. Estructuralista (this is quite fun with Lovlas constant commentary)
  55. Silkthewanderer My time management is horrible tonight
  56. Silkthewanderer I would have loved 17. f5 exf exf Nxf Rxf but it just doesn't work.
  57. flipiflapi go silk, go closed sicilian, go f5!
  58. IM lovlas what if I add Rfe8 Qf2 and go d4
  59. IM lovlas avoid all the f5 trouble I think
  60. IM lovlas yeah its simpler
  61. IM lovlas no point in going ham when you can play like a turtle
  62. IM lovlas ofc I could go d4 right away and its prolly decent. But I think the queen is slightly misplaced on f2 where it doesnt guard the d3 pawn
  63. IM lovlas c4 now?
  64. IM lovlas lets do nothing and see what he does
  65. IM lovlas f5 still doesnt work as far as i can tell
  66. IM lovlas maybe I should have gone for Bc6 planning Qb7
  67. IM lovlas might have been an even simpler move
  68. IM lovlas my plan was Qf2 d4 cxd and then Bxd4 and f5 cant be played and the pawn on d3 is weak
  69. quirked wait why is silk flagging
  70. IM lovlas now must be the time for c4 no?
  71. IM lovlas or d4
  72. IM lovlas nah
  73. IM lovlas or do we do nothing again with Bc6 :P
  74. IM lovlas I like doing nothing
  75. Gingersquirrelnuts (19.Bc1)c4 is explosive...
  76. IM lovlas now I gotto be careful so f5 doesnt win
  77. IM lovlas I thought he had to take and then I was unsure what to retake with
  78. IM lovlas I think I take on c3 now and on d3 in some fashion
  79. IM lovlas c5 is hanging back so im not winning a pawn. But his structure is ruined
  80. IM lovlas which is something. I still gotto watch out for f5 though
  81. IM lovlas I kinda want to go Red8 with a cheapo. Threatening Rxc3
  82. IM lovlas and its a sensible move so I miht end up going for it
  83. IM lovlas just activating the rook
  84. IM lovlas if white goes e5 then im set for life
  85. IM lovlas the structure should just win itself after that
  86. IM lovlas Rg3 might win material here. Rf2 Qb7 Ne3 Nf5
  87. IM lovlas mb not
  88. IM lovlas but structurally I think I'm just winning. The g7 bishop can get bac into the game via f8
  89. IM lovlas so I just need to swap off the light squared bishops and then put pressure on all the weak pawns
  90. IM lovlas so I think Rg3 is the way to go
  91. IM lovlas f5 is never a topic anymore either
  92. IM lovlas oh wow I just notiecd that Ne3 Nf5. Bf8 threatens to win the queen
  93. IM lovlas I think this is very strong
  94. IM lovlas dont see a defence
  95. IM lovlas Kh2 possibly
  96. IM lovlas but I assume Nxe3 wins that somehow
  97. IM lovlas gx prolly
  98. IM lovlas I almost thought I had messed it up now since after gxf Rff2 Rd1 there is Kh2 but I think I can just take multiple times on g2 and then
  99. IM lovlas on c1
  100. IM lovlas mb I should ex just to avoid g6 stuff in the end
  101. IM lovlas Rxg2 might have won as well. I didnt really consider it
  102. IM lovlas should be over now I think
  103. IM lovlas e7 or exf is never really scary
  104. IM lovlas I see a mate
  105. Chewbacca_Defense gg
  106. Gingersquirrelnuts gg
  107. mojomoe gg
  108. Estructuralista gg
  109. Lukhas g gguys
  110. IM lovlas surprising that 4...g6 was a novelty
  111. IM lovlas its so natural
  112. IM lovlas maybe it doesnt go well against g4
  113. Silkthewanderer I mean it certainly worked out. Not like there is a huge body of theory here.
  114. IM lovlas yeah I liked the position I got
  115. IM lovlas the engine evals says its completely winning after 16...d5 that was not my eval. I thought i was slightly better
  116. IM lovlas i thought 21.Nd1 was a decisive mistake
  117. Silkthewanderer h5 really killed a lot of my standard ideas in the position.
  118. IM lovlas yeah I was happy to get h5 g5 in
  119. IM lovlas maybe you shouldnt go g5
  120. Silkthewanderer It is fun to see how I just gradually lose without an outright mistake
  121. IM lovlas yeah I think thats the drawback of moves like g4. They leave a lot to be desired from a positional point of view
  122. Silkthewanderer By move 20 I was already not liking my chances and SF agrees
  123. IM lovlas yeah but im very surprised by the eval
  124. IM lovlas its almost -3
  125. IM lovlas and I wasnt sure I was better at that point
  126. IM lovlas I thought I was. But I wasnt sure after 21.cxd4
  127. IM lovlas then you go something like Kh1 move the queen somewhere and go f5
  128. Silkthewanderer If I ever get f5 in I might try to bamboozle you somewhere but I never even got to try really tricky stuff
  129. IM lovlas yeah thankfully it never really seems to work
  130. IM lovlas but I had to evalulate it at every move
  131. Silkthewanderer I think 5. d3 was already a big practical mistake. Nge2 to keep the option of an early d4 is more in the spirit
  132. IM lovlas yeah
  133. IM lovlas I think so as well
  134. IM lovlas well not a mistake prolly
  135. IM lovlas but it makes sense to develop the knight and threaten d4
  136. Silkthewanderer Of course there is again d6 and I start wasting time again. There probably is a reason why g3 and f4 are the main lines there.
  137. IM lovlas yeah I donno really what you did wrong in the opening
  138. IM lovlas you played very naturally
  139. IM lovlas its possible g5 was a decisive positional error
  140. Silkthewanderer Personally I find them not that ch
  141. Silkthewanderer Personally I don't find them that good for White though and I didn't prep for Najdorf
  142. IM lovlas I was hoping to play a dragon tbh
  143. IM lovlas but then you played Nc3 which I had seen you played before
  144. IM lovlas so I was kinda out of prep but I know some stuff thankfully
  145. IM lovlas I saw one game you played against 2...a6 where you played g3
  146. IM lovlas so that was what I expecting
  147. Silkthewanderer The Sicilian is already positionally better for Black and I give myself more weaknesses. Apparently I need concrete threats to not be losing
  148. Silkthewanderer And g5 just gave up on most dynamics.
  149. IM lovlas Yeah. Generally you need something concrete when you push the pawns that far and castle behind them
  150. IM lovlas it leaves massives holes
  151. Silkthewanderer I do win with this offbeat stuff occassionally. The margin for error is not that big for you, I hoped.
  152. IM lovlas oh I make tons of mistakes :P
  153. IM lovlas but thankfully not today
  154. SycoraxCirce Lovlas mistakes are other peoples good moves
  155. IM lovlas haha
  156. IM lovlas I wish
  157. Silkthewanderer Probably I should just get off my butt and learn one of the 15 decent options against the Najdorf rather than do this to myself.
  158. IM lovlas if you want something simple check out MC - Dominguez
  159. IM lovlas with Be2 Bg5
  160. IM lovlas I really like that for white
  161. Silkthewanderer I did see the game actually. It didn't loon simple to me, though.
  162. IM lovlas yea its not simple at all :P
  163. IM lovlas but najdrof is hard
  164. Silkthewanderer The Qd3 lines that have popped up recently did intrigue me, not sure how accessible these are
  165. IM lovlas yeah I donno. There are a few games at least. No idea if there are any resources that recommend it
  166. IM lovlas but its very meta
  167. IM lovlas so it must be good :P
  168. Silkthewanderer The tricky part with all these supposedly good lines for White is that you can still get completely demolished once your prep line ends
  169. IM lovlas yeah for sure
  170. IM lovlas there isnt an easy solution really
  171. IM lovlas which is why i like Be2 Bg5
  172. IM lovlas its just a few lines
  173. IM lovlas and if you know them well its difficult for black
  174. IM lovlas but im sure there are several similar options
  175. Silkthewanderer With other rabbit holes like Dragon or Svesh I at least have the comfort to know that many lines are analysed to the end.
  176. Silkthewanderer I miss the 00s where you could learn 15 moves in the English attack, play the rest by ear and win a decent percentage of games.
  177. Silkthewanderer At least at amateur level :p
  178. IM lovlas yeah times have changed at higher levels
  179. IM lovlas you need to know your stuff otherwise some kid comes along and crushes you with the newest most fashionable weapon
  180. Silkthewanderer Eh, the trend is roughly similar at amateur level, just to a different degree
  181. IM lovlas yeah I think the general level of knowledge has increased a lot lately
  182. Silkthewanderer I do enjoy it as a spectator but I am also very grateful that I am not playing at a level high enough that I would need to participate in...
  183. Silkthewanderer ...the arms race of Leela prep
  184. IM lovlas yeah I dont feel like Im there either thankfully
  185. IM lovlas but I do like experiementing a bit with leela
  186. IM lovlas its a lot of fun
  187. Silkthewanderer I assume it is very fun when you are actually good enough to convert the advantages Leela finds for you.
  188. IM lovlas engine evals are strange beasts at times tbh
  189. IM lovlas I just look for a position that is easy to play and hard to play against
  190. IM lovlas or that is blatantly winning ofc
  191. Silkthewanderer I assume the Leela eval is a bit closer to the practical worthiness than the SF eval. If you get a position that is only okay because of....
  192. IM lovlas Yeah I think thats the general idea at least. Even though it's not always clear what leela wants to do either
  193. IM lovlas But it's a nice supplement to SF
  194. Silkthewanderer ...specific only moves across various plans, Leela should sound the alarm while SF says it is cool
  195. IM lovlas yeah one of the main problems with SF is that it gives everyhing as 0.00
  196. Silkthewanderer Yeah...technically correct but not very helpful
  197. Silkthewanderer Anyway, gotta run
  198. Silkthewanderer Getting late and my mental faculties are already getting even dimmer than during the game :p
  199. IM lovlas gg!
  200. Silkthewanderer Thanks for the analysis, I will try to put up a better challenge next time
