How to Use Calculation Books Effectively!
Puzzles are the easiest source available for any chess player. They are widely used by players of all levels. But what if I told you that you might be approaching them the wrong way? There is a more effective method to maximize their benefits. Let’s dive in and explore how to make the most of calculation books. When I was very young, I used to solve a lot of puzzles every single day, and I believe it significantly helped improve my calculation skills. However, looking back, I realize that the process could have been even more productive if I had followed certain methods.
The Lazy and Common Method
The typical approach many players use is to solve a position or two and then immediately check the answers. If their solution is correct, they feel satisfied; if it’s wrong, they glance at the correct answer and move on to the next puzzle. Unfortunately, this method doesn’t allow you to fully understand the patterns behind the mistakes.
The Correct Method
To get the maximum benefit from calculation books, you need to follow a structured process. Here’s how:
- Preparation: Gather a chessboard, calculation book, notebook, and pen before starting.
- Set Up Positions: For each puzzle, set up the position on the board. Avoid moving the pieces while solving.
- Solve and Write: Solve the puzzle mentally and write down your solution; include necessary sub-variations.
- Solving session: Work on 15-20 positions minimum in one sitting using the above method.
- Review: Ask someone else to check your solutions. They don't even need to be chess players; they just need to understand the notation. They should highlight mistakes and point out any missed resources for your opponent.
- Redo Mistakes: Attempt the incorrect puzzles again, integrating the feedback. If you get a puzzle wrong a second time, try it once more. If you still can’t solve it on the third attempt, consult your trainer, and they will help you understand the pattern.
- No Peeking: Throughout this process, resist the temptation to look at the answers in the book.
By using this approach, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the patterns and ideas in each puzzle.
Conclusion
I hope this guide has introduced you to a new and effective way to use calculation books. By implementing these methods, you can significantly enhance your calculation skills and overall chess understanding. Happy solving!
