Puzzle of the day
Hi chess players! Today I'm going to be discussing the puzzle of the day here on lichess! The puzzle (White to move)
Try to solve this puzzle before scrolling down!
The answer
We notice that the dark squares around blacks king are weak and if we could strike with the queen and bishop together we could create a checkmating threat. We first look at 1.Qh6+ since both the queen and bishop are already striking there, but realize after 1...Kg8 we can't continue our attack. Next we look at potential moves that could threaten checkmate. If your familiar with the types of positions in the next diagram...
In the first diagram you may spot 1.Bf6 as a sideways version of that checkmating pattern.
As an added bonus, 1.Bf6 also hits the black queen on c3, thereby forking between checkmate and the black queen, winning material. If you enjoyed this puzzle, please like this content and follow me! Bye for now!
