CHESS TITLES EXPLAINED
Awards given by the international chess governing body for outstanding performance.There are 8 FIDE chess titles:
Open Titles
- Grandmaster (GM) - Requires a rating of 2500+ and 3 GM norms
- International Master (IM) - Requires a rating of 2400+ and 3 IM norms
- FIDE Master (FM) - Requires a rating of 2300+, no norms needed
- Candidate Master (CM) - Requires a rating of 2200+, no norms needed
Women's Titles
- Woman Grandmaster (WGM) - Requires a rating of 2300+ and 3 WGM norms
- Woman International Master (WIM) - Requires a rating of 2200+ and 3 WIM norms
- Woman FIDE Master (WFM) - Requires a rating of 2100+, no norms needed
- Woman Candidate Master (WCM) - Requires a rating of 2000+, no norms needed
So in total there are 4 open titles and 4 women's titles awarded by FIDE, with the Grandmaster title being the highest. The GM title is held by over 1,800 players as of October 2023.
Beyond FIDE titles, various national chess federations award their own titles, which are not recognized by FIDE. These titles often include:
- National Master (NM): Commonly awarded by many countries, typically requiring a rating of around 2200.
- Woman National Master (WNM): Similar to NM but specifically for women, often with a lower rating requirement.
There are four FIDE Online Arena titles:
- Arena Grandmaster (AGM) - Requires a minimum online rating of 2000, maintained over 50 rapid games, 100 blitz games, or 150 bullet games.
- Arena International Master (AIM) - Requires a minimum online rating of 1700, maintained over the same number of games as AGM.
- Arena FIDE Master (AFM) - Requires a minimum online rating of 1400, with the same game requirements.
- Arena Candidate Master (ACM) - Requires a minimum online rating of 1100, also with the same game requirements.
These titles are designed for players in the lower rating band and can be earned through online play on the FIDE Online Arena.
