Chess online versus standard: Which is better?

ChessOff topicLichess
Is chess going to be online-only soon?? Should I panic or rejoice?

Hello world!
Let's talk about this popular topic: is it really going to be online-only soon? Have fun reading!)

My opinion

In my opinion, everything is simple here. Despite the fact that online chess is very popular now, I believe that the live game will not leave us. In any case, online will never replace live emotions, atmosphere, etc. Moreover, there is a big problem with online cheating right now. Someone will say: it's the same in the living. But still, it's MUCH easier to fix violations in a live game. Despite all this, I believe that chess will become even more popular online very soon. But, as I said earlier, they won't replace the living ones.

Opinions of others

Kramnik Vladimir:

"Chess is one of the sports where we can play online, unlike other sports. This can help those in need in the situation related to the coronavirus pandemic. image.pngOf course, it's more interesting to play live, especially if it concerns official tournaments. Nevertheless, as an opportunity to meet is a very good option, we need to hold more tournaments, including online ones. However, I would like to emphasize that I doubt that online tournaments will completely replace live chess," Kramnik said. "Of course, if a similar situation with a pandemic repeats in the future, unlike football or hockey, we can organize and play in this format. Interest in online tournaments is high, but we don't want to take advantage of the current moment and thus gather an audience," he added. "Our goal is to ensure that in the future grandmasters have the opportunity to play and fans can watch them. Now it just so happens that we have a serious influx of people who watch chess. We want to prove that chess is an interesting sport in competition with other sports. Our idea is to develop chess in the long term, including online," Kramnik said. Source: Interfax

But for example, Anatoly Karpov believes, just like me, that online chess will never replace live chess.
Anyway, it seems to me that many people think the same way as me. I often see this question in the chat on Russian-language streams, and in most cases the streamer replies: "An online game will not replace live chess." Most people think so, but not all.

Where did online chess come from and why?

Obviously, not everyone can play live chess, and online chess was created for this purpose. Moreover, their advantage is that they can be played from anywhere with anyone, anytime. It will also probably not be so interesting to play live for 30 or 15 seconds (black wins, because they have a watch for their working hand), but online there are no such problems! Online chess really became popular during Covid, and that's when real online life began!
