The Queen's Gambit is one of the oldest and most popular openings in chess and is played by many of the top chess players in the world. White is fighting in a very ambitious way for central squares, in particular for the e4-square. Therefore, white is trying to get rid of black’s d5-pawn in order to have better control over the e4-square.
In the second video of the series, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you some of the major variations in the Queen’s Gambit Accepted. The main focus is here on the main strategies and plans for both sides in the different lines. Note: In this video, the mainline with 3.Nf3 will not be covered. If you are interested in the mainline with 3.Nf3, we will have a separate video which is only covering this major option.

In the vast majority of cases in the Queen’s Gambit Accepted we deal with isolated pawn positions with an isolated pawn either on d4 or d5. The pawn is a static weakness and might be a problem in the endgame stage. At the same time, it offers dynamic strength in the middlegame and better central control. Therefore, it is important that every chess player who wants to play the Queen’s Gambit Accepted is also familiar with the classical strategic patterns such as isolated pawns and how to play with and against them.
The main variations covered in the video are:
0:42 – Queen’s Gambit Accepted: Accelerated Mannheim Variation 3.Qa4
2:35 – Queen’s Gambit Accepted: 3.a4 Variation
4:55 – Queen’s Gambit Accepted: Central Variation 3.e4
5:28 – Black’s move: 3…b5, Greco Variation
9:14 – Black’s move 3…c5, Rubinstein Variation
12:59 – Black’s move 3…Nc6, Modern Variation
16:11 – Black’s move 3…Nf6, Alekhine System
22:52 – Black’s move 3…e5, McDonnell Defense
