In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is starting a new series dedicated to the topic of controlling the center. The center is the most important part of the chessboard and there are two reasons for centralization.
- The central position makes almost all pieces much more powerful. The chess pieces control more squares from the centre and are therefore usually better placed there.
- From central squares, pieces have access to both flanks with the same quantity of moves.
This video also deals with the impact of each piece when it is placed in the center. A knight in the center can control eight squares, whereas the same piece in the corner of the board controls only two squares. Knowing the influence of each piece when placed in the center will help you to take control of it.
