In this video, IM Alex Astaneh is going to show some positions which not only will give you an idea of the different types of smothered mates that can happen but importantly will show you that very often smothered checkmates arise from a queen sacrifice. In total, Alex is presenting you three different smothered checkmate motifs which often arise after the typical queen sacrifice.
What is a smothered mate?
The smothered mate is a checkmate delivered by a knight in which the mated king is unable to move because he is surrounded by his own pieces. That maybe does not make so much sense to you right now and you cannot visualize it, so the best thing to do is lets actually show some positions where a checkmate arises.
