Anand vs Aronian - 2014 FIDE World Candidates Chess Tournament
This is a Round 1 game from the 2014 FIDE Candidates chess tournament between Vishy Anand and Levon Aronian. The winner of this 14-round tournament, which is being held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, will act as the challenger to Magnus Carlsen in the 2014 world chess championship match. Anand opts for the Ruy Lopez and grabs the pawn Aronian offered in a variation still in the spirit of the Marshall Gambit. In return for the material deficit, Aronian has a lead in development and very well coordinated pieces all aiming towards Anand's kingside. One of the strategies almost always available to the side with the material advantage is to simply "give it back". This game illustates this very idea, and acts as an excellent example of endgame technique with the bishop pair.
