In this video, IM Alex Astaneh is explaining you what the smothered mate is and is sharing with you, typical patterns and situations where you can apply the smothered mate.
First of all, the smothered mate is a checkmate delivered by a knight in which the mated king is unable to move because he is surrounded by his own pieces. That maybe does not make so much sense to you right now and you cannot visualize it, so the best thing to do is let's actually show some positions where a checkmate arises. The focus of this video is to show you some situations where a smothered mate can arise very quickly out of the opening.
The three openings covered in the video are:
0:52 Caro-Kann Defense:
The first example of a smothered mate is shown in the Caro-Kann Defense in the Karpov Variation. In this variation there is a sneaky trap that thousands of players have fallen into and which involves a smothered mate.
3:02 Ruy Lopez:
The second example is in the opening known as the Ruy Lopez (or also known as the Spanish opening).
4:47 Budapest Gambit:
The final example is in the Budapest Gambit which arises out of the Queenβs Pawn Opening. This chess trick works especially well if you are playing fast games of chess like blitz chess or even bullet chess online.
With these few practical examples shown in this video, that can occur really early on in the opening are worth knowing and worth remembering because if you want you can try to catch out your opponents in these openings and if not then at least hopefully you will avoid falling victim to these traps that have claimed thousands of players over the years on the chessboards.
