i agree learning a game when u are addicted to it feels so effortless, in the first three month of learning chess all a can think of was chess so i probably worked 6 hours a day for 3 month on chess on top of having a daily job.
i still have a passion on chess but the addiction is gone so i fulfill my passion by reading about chess disscussion/storys/history, actually working on chess tires me up and feels like a chore.
maybe if i join some OTB tournaments in hoping actual competition face to face would flame up the addiction.
i recently got back to playing starcraft 1 after not playing it for like 10 years and was surprised how fast i got close to my old strength in just a couple of month, i had a glimpse of an addiction but it was more like training/regaining muscle memory instead of learning the game.

This piece resonates so well with me. I was addicted to Pokémon when I was a kid and am really glad I found chess in my late teens. To your "I see you out there, chess-obsessed people" paragraph, I say, "We see you, too, and we welcome you into the 'obsession community' wholeheartedly!"

Motivation is what pushes one on all endeavors. Something to fight for, that's all there is.
