The most recent March 15th inter-School battle

Inter-School Battles 2023-24: Winter and Lent term so far

TournamentLichess
The Inter-School Battles have existed since June 2020, with a singlular-format arena per fortnight since April 25th 2021.

Introduction:

Since I began playing the inter-school battles - to date one of my favourite parts about being an ECF junior, the ability to compete for my school vs others and a tracker by performance of my improvement at chess - I have always been interested in the statistics behind the arenas. Last academic year, I tracked the cumulative school points across the year, and during the tense back-and-forth between Dulwich and Tiffin, I was delighted to see Dulwich emerge victorious!

I have not done this this year to much extent, but by the end of the academic year I will have a full recap including the final standings. In the meantime, here are some smaller-scale stats I collected! Statistics for all-time are counted from April 2021 onwards, due to there being 3 inter-school split arenas before, making it too complicated/speculative to conclude results.

School Points:

With an increase in popularity to berserk more in inter-school arenas, there has been an increase in points amongst schools. This can be shown by the top 2 school individual points records all being set in the past 12 months, above KCS's April 22 2022 record of 173 points.

1. City Of London School - 179 points December 8th 2023
2. Dulwich College - 173 points March 1st 2024
3. King's College School - 173 points April 22nd 2022
The Current record:

School Streaks:

The past records of school win-streaks are legendary, however it is surprising to see that there are not many win-streaks in Inter-School history. Here are all the streaks that have ever happened since April 2021:

  • King's College School- 5 (April-September 2022) INTER-SEASONAL
  • Dulwich College Senior School- 3 (February-present 2024)
  • Wilson's School Chess Club- 3 (October-December 2021)
  • Reading School Chess Club- 2 (April-May 2021)
  • St Paul's School Chess Club- 2 (May-June 2021)
  • St Paul's School Chess Club- 2 (September-October 2021)
  • Queen Elizabeth Barnet- 2 (April-May 2023)
  • Dulwich College Senior School- 2 (November 2023)

Dulwich College Currently holds a streak of 3 wins as of today, the biggest streak in 2 years. Let's see if that continues into the summer term...

Players:

Less extremely strong chess players are playing inter-school, with players such as ViktorStoyanov and Zendalith leaving their respective schools, yet the average strength of an inter-school has increased in the current day, due to a significany increase in 1900+ rated players playing inter-school. With an average of 160 players per battle, the most recent March 15th battle nearly broke the 1400 average rating thresholds (1399), something almost never seen in inter-school!
Regardless, top level players still appear. The 2 strongest players to play inter-school in the past 12 months are CM @Stanbad1 and @Dulwich_College_SG, with blitz peaks of 2679 and 2645 respectively.

Points:

With the implement of berserk, players have soared in point scores over the past 2 years, peaking at Liam Clery's Legendary 61 points in 1 hour, all acquired in one single streak! The real record is 67 points by CM @UKchessbomber, but in a 3+2v format so I credit this separately!
Here are the individual 50+ points scores in 5+3 inter-schools of all time:

THIS YEAR'S TOP POINTS PERFORMANCES:

This leaderboard of the top 10 "elite" players shows both a consistency as well as high level performances, that can be compared using TPR's and average opponent ratings, to show the 10 highest contributing players in points with a rating above 2200 at some point in an inter-school.
Credit to @Turtleboss, @Clucey19, @Sussyimpostorbaka111 and @shisha25 for being quite consistent, strong players that couldn't make this list.

Future results:

Once this academic year ends with the final inter-school, i will give a final recap with cumulative points by school, updating any statistics from these lists as well.

Thank you to everyone who has played inter-school! I was first introduced to the ECF community through these, and I continue to enjoy to play these events, 2.5 years and a 1050 rating point difference later.
The more people that play inter-school, the more exciting, intense and fun they are! I ask that we continue this to be a casual and fun tradition that we partake in, for the enjoyment of all players regardless of strength. I thank this event to motivating me to get to this point in strength, so anyone who enjoys these events have the same opportunity! See you all after Easter Break!
