Atualmente, a versão amplamente difundida é a de que teria surgido na Índia com o nome de Chaturanga e dali se espalhou para a China, Rússia, Pérsia e Europa, onde se estabeleceram as regras atuais. Pesquisas recentes indicam uma possível origem na China do século III a.C., na região entre o Uzbequistão e a Pérsia antiga (atual Irã).
