The colle system is a closed opening introduced by Belgian GM Edgard Colle in the 1920s. As any system of attack, the move order can be altered according to the state of the board.
Now, for those who have read Logical Chess by Irving Chernev should be familiar enough with the main line of opening.
1d4d52Nf3Nf63e3c54c3e65Bd3Bd66Nbd2Nbd77O-OO-O8Re1...As you can see in this example (Colle–O'Hanlon, 1930 www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1316498) the system is based on the tense advancement of the e pawn, which is propeled by all the pieces that, combined, solidify the obtention of said square.8...Re89e4!!dxe410Nxe4...It is usually better to take with the knight for two main reasons: The threat of taking the bishop on d6 AND the release of the c1 bishop, which now has a good scope to be activated.10...Nxe411Bxe4cxd4?!The move is dubious since its main purpose is to tempt the knight to take on d4, creating a weakness on h2 which is now attacked by the d6 bishop and, potentially, by the queen. But, Colle wasn't having any of that jazz.
Also, as you will see in the text move, it allows Colle to take initiative with a dangerous attack.
12Bxh7+...12.Nxd4Bxh2+13.Kf1Qh414.Bxh7+Qxh712...Kxh713Ng5+Kg6Not Kh8 or g8 for obvious reasons.14h4!?...Many things to explore here, but since this is an introduction on the Colle system I wont delve into it.14...Rh815Rxe6+!Nf616h5+Kh617Rxd6Qa518Nxf7+Kh719Ng5+Kg820Qb3+...Black resigns.
I would like you to note the spirit of the system. It is an attacking system, that relentlessly opens up the e file with multiple kingside attacks and combinations ideas. It is important to respect this, because the preparation of the attack and formation of the pieces is passive but it springs into the battle completely out of the blue if played correctly.
