In this study we will look at some ideas relating to weak squares and color complexes. These ideas relate to the pawn structure.

Let's define weak square. A weak square is a square that cannot be attacked by a pawn. For example, White can never attack d4 with a pawn, so his d4 square is weak. Black can't attack f6 and h6 with pawns. That is one of the major downsides of a fianchetto: You lose control of the squares around your bishop. If White has succeeded in trading off Black's fianchetto bishop, those squares would become very weak. In this case we would say that Black has 'weak dark squares' as the dark squares around his King are weak.
