After learning how the pieces move, the other rules of the game, how to read and write algebraic chess notation, how to count the force, the five elements of chess principles, and basic chess terminology, the chess beginner is prepared to begin learning chess tactics. The learning of tactics will never end.

Tactics are maneuvers that take advantage of short-term opportunities with the goal to gain an advantage or a decision in the game.

There are many books and web pages describing tactical motifs (themes/patterns) with fairly standard categories and terminology.

The best way to learn tactics? Learn the motifs. Practice. In particular, study tactical positions (tactical exercises, tactical games, etc), taking notes. Go over your notes with a much stronger player or a very strong chess program. Chess programs are particularly good at tactics, but they are not perfect.

It has been said that 99% of chess play is tactics. Other than learning basic chess endings, learning tactics is the best bang-for-the-buck for your chess study time.
