Lang,JJ: We return to the Chess Life Kids Opening Project with an exploration of themes in the Panov Attack against the Caro-Kann Defense. White begins with 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. c4, and often reaches an Isolated Queen's Pawn (IQP) structure that shows up so often in this repertoire. Caro-Kann players hope to get closed games with slow, maneuvering play. But in this variation, the board opens up quickly, which means Black's pieces are in much more danger.
In our example, White crashes through with:
15d5!exd5Anything else allows d5xe6 and even more of an attack.16Nxd5...and Black cannot defend all their pieces. After16...Qd817Nxe7+Nxe718Rxc8!...Black resigned,
since
18...Bxc819Qxd8Rxd820Bxe7...leaves White up a bishop.
