Blog etiquette
Lichess Blogs allow users to express opinions, promote events, clubs and organisations, and start discussions with other users.
This page sets out some important rules and advice for blog authors.
Blogs must comply with the Lichess Community Guidelines. All authors should read these guidelines before publishing a blog.
Banned content
A complete list of banned content types is provided in the Community Guidelines.
Blog authors should take special note that the following types of content are not permitted in blogs:
- Content that is disturbing, obscene, potentially illegal, or harassing/threatening to other individuals or groups.
- Misinformation - content that could mislead other users.
- Content that could potentially cause harm to readers.
- Clickbait - a title and/or title image that is misleading or unrelated to the rest of the blog.
- Content entirely or mostly generated by AI tools such as ChatGPT or other models. We acknowledge that AI tools can be useful for brainstorming, editing, and other tasks, and we don't have a problem with those uses. However, we expect all published content to reflect the author’s own (human) thinking and effort, and we reserve the right to restrict the visibility of content that doesn't meet this expectation.
- Copyrighted work that the author does not own or have permission to publish - this includes text, images, and games with annotations.
Minimum age rules
- Blog authors must be at least 15 years old.
- Any individual who appears in an image published in a blog must be at least 18 years old or have a parent or guardian's consent for publication of the image.
Advertising and promotion
- Although some advertising and promotion in blogs is allowed, we reserve the right to restrict the visibility and 'reach' of posts that appear to mainly focus on promotion.
- We encourage users to publish high-quality original content.
- When users publish a blog, their followers see a timeline notification on their Lichess homepage. This is one of the most important ways in which readers learn about new blogs. Users who publish too many low-effort blogs may simply be un-followed.
Subjects
- Users can publish blogs on any subject that does not violate the Community Guidelines and the other rules on this page. You can even blog about your favourite cookie recipe. However, it won't reach many users through our blog discovery tools and processes.
Other tips
- All blogs should have a title image. They aren't mandatory, but they make a big difference.
- Please apply accurate tags to your blogs that correctly reflect their content. For example, the tag "chess variants" should only be applied to blogs that are genuinely about chess variants.
