For getting used to a physical board: Do what Sarg0n said. For getting used to the time control: Play correspondence and do some puzzles. Take your time there!

I guess wearing them at OTB opens generally attracts more amateurs than elite players to the site. Which in turn results in a deflation of the rating pool. So, yes, it does improve your rating then.
