Subtle tactic/find the best move

I failed that one, and I think it's a really good one. But generally, when you find a good move, how you make sure it is the best one? Or you just decide the move is good enough to play it?

calculate. calculate every lines you think are good/interesting and compare them. choose the one you think is best (or the easiest to reach a win if you have an advantage in the game).

in the puzzle you are talking about, d5 is obvious as first move. the only other move would be Qc7 and you lose the advantage with this one. d5 force white to take back with their pawn and the hard part is after that:
-the first instinct is to take back on d5, gaining a tempo on the bishop and forcing Bb5, Nc6 or Nd7. gaining a small advantage and a smooth devellopment for black. you can easily gain some space in the center/mess white pawn structure/devellop your pieces a step faster than white.

this is NOT a bad decision at all but:
- b5! is better because the bishop is trapped and you can eat it in exchange for your two pawns. so long you don't blunder Bd7 (which lose the rook) the position you achieve is better than the other one (because you have two bishops and white doesn't,because your king is not in too much danger and should castle pretty fast etc...). This is easier to win for black and the position reached is not too complicated.
OK what!?

"...because your king is not in too much danger and should castle pretty fast."

After ...b5 Bxf7+ then ...Ke7 is forced. What do you mean "castle pretty fast"?

...b5 Bxf7+ ...Ke7 Bg5.

What happens after Bg5?

...d5 runs into BxN+ and if Kx or g7x then Bh5 can retreat. Nothing else is hanging in white's position and white should stand clearly better no?

What am I missing after Bg5?

Oh wait...

...b5 Bxf7+ ...Ke7 Bg5 ...a5 BxNf6 ...bxBf6 Bh5

No that looks like it holds too right?

I'm still stuck...

...

you are right if you play ...b5 first but thats a mistake.

your first move should be ...d5. when white captures with a pawn that blocks the Bxf7 option because the white pawn is now in the way. so then you can play b5.
@Onyx_Chess : i didn't even consider 5.b5 xD the threat on f7 was too eyecatching to me so i only tried to remove it or defend it (with the queen for exemple). the center pawns structure was convenient for it so i didn't try to calculate lines where f7 is lost.

like i said, in a blitz game i would probably just trade every pawns on d5 and reach a stable position with a slight advantage. i doubt i would see the b5! move trapping the bishop because i have the bad habit to not think much in the first ten moves (i work on it)
