We often miss moves we would be able to do (i'm the first one to do that !)
Using tactics puzzle to gain the eye of an eagle !
Following the chek-list given by jonesmh, and if there is any utility to summarize : take a great attention to the menaces and to the security of your moved pieces (checking three more times when you are playing the beloved queen !)
About the time : of course being in time trouble is dangerous, but losing a piece because you think only 15 seconds instead of 3 minutes, damned !!
Say you play a 60 mn game, with an average of 40 moves and no increment. After the obvious moves of the opening (euh, when it is obvious !) and the obvious moves of some exchanges, may be you have 55 mn left for 30 moves. It gives an average of 2 mn per move.
A good idea of playing against stronger players, but they think very fast, faster than you. With dangerous moves. So, no choice to be in time trouble sometimes.
A long way to Eden !
