I've played this made-up variant with friends and it's pretty fun. I'd like to see it on lichess. Here are the rules:
Start off with an empty board and all your pieces off to the side (2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen, king, 8 pawns). White goes first and puts a piece on the board. The placement of the piece is restricted to their half of the board, they can place any available piece they want, but they cannot place a piece that puts their opponent in check.
Black goes second and places a piece on the board. Piece placement continues until all the pieces are on the board and then the game begins and plays like the chess960 variant. The king can castle using the same rules as chess960 and both the rook and king must be in row 1 for white row 8 for black.
I came up with this variant to encourage more checkmates during the mid-game and so far it seems to be holding. I also like how quickly you can develop the rooks if you choose to and how this can simulate some very interesting chess puzzles.
Let me know thoughts/feedback and if this could be made into a variant on the game. I still haven't come up with a name for it.
