Objectivity - the key ingredient for your growth

Just an amazing article brother. You know what I was recently thinking about becoming a grandmaster very quick and the time period which I thought that I would become one was really unrealistic.i was thinking I can become gm in 2.5 years as I already have an online rating of 2100.Thanks a lot man for publishing this article and showing me the reality .Now I can understand that you should have crazy dreams and work crazy for it but you should not lose objectivity and that every success stories has its ups and down and not everything goes smooth .
Thanks a lot once again @Avetik_ChessMood .
My goal is to become at least FM but my real goal is becoming IM. I have 1769 ELO( my highest was 1894) and I want to reach 2000 until I am 18 (I am 15 atm). Do you think it is possible? (I have a chess coach, I play a lot of OTB games, I am working 10 minutes - 3 hours a day on my chess( I think average time is 1-1,5 hour). I play chess since 7 years, but only since 2 years in a chess team with players of equal strength. I raised up +400 DWZ this year(1 year ago I had something in 1100, at 1st January I had 1161 and now I have 1674 DWZ and 1769 ELO( I played very very good at my first ELO tournament(usually i only play DWZ tournaments, My start rankin g was 114 I became 37 at the end with 4,5/7 (The draw was very stupid I blundered a winning position. I had a performance of 1950(average oppenent 1866 no oppenent was lower rated than 1700.

I showed again and again that my playing strenght is somewhere at 1650-1850 (I think usually 1700-1800) but I play to fast. Do you have a tip how to play slower in OTB games @Avetik_ChessMood ?
Great article mate! The way it starts as a personal story got me invested and makes it much more than a list of advices. All the advices are sound but the examples alongside them are what makes this article a joy to read.
Excellent blog! I started playing Chess at 41 yrs old, so I quickly understood the levels in Chess.
Becoming a GM is like playing in the NFL or being a Premier League footballer, and the competition is so fierce that many top level IM's are left waiting in line with the FM's nipping at their heels.
I think young people would be best served by understanding the routes to becoming a GM before setting it as a goal.
Even though I recall reading this article in the past, I took the time to re-read it today, because it is simply THAT good. Thank you for sharing all the fascinating personal stories and conclusions. Indeed, one of the easiest mind traps in chess is getting too arrogant after a great performance and then getting mad at yourself for being unable to replicate it. I often find myself getting way too worried about my rating, despite playing supposedly for 'fun'. I can barely imagine how your student who got his first GM norm felt. Oh, and, as a fellow instrument lover, you totally got me curious about the reveal of a *certain* violinist as well.
All the best~!
Very nice to read, personally i do all kinds of things, chess among them and i noticed falling into this trap time and time again. While i know i ll never be a master at anything simply because i dont have the time or determination to train as much i would need to in one single discipline, i did always get very competetiv to the point of self hatred cause i felt like i could always do better. But looking at it, trying to be somewhat objectiv, it just meant i had less fun and often even performed worse because i was busy beeing angry instead of focusing on the game and most of time i just felt bad because i always compared myself to peaple who had spend many years practicing even if i was a beginner myself.
