WTF Lichess , where was my notification?

@thibault I love lichess for everything, including the free philosophy. Suggesting to use twitter or facebook seems like a contradiction to me. On my side, I'm advertising as much as I can to the Hubzilla[1] fediverse[2].

Maybe some different channel to promote/communicate should be nice, there's a big choice out there.

I think that you especially, as a FLOSS developer, could/should be interested...

I can sympathize with OP's situation - I would be really bummed out if I missed out on this event because I wasn't following the right (and admittedly many) communication channels. I wouldn't mind for S tier events like this I received:

1) Push notifications in both browser and mobile app
2) Email alerts (maybe for lichess blog posts, since probably vast majority of people don't use atom feeds)

Perhaps devs have already considered these options and thought it could be too intrusive. I would be ok with it, especially if they add a setting to toggle notifications.
I received a message/notification/alert through the little clock, top right of the screen. A couple of days before the tournament.
Probably because I was eligible to play.
Why not send the same notification to all members for unique events like this?

The tournament was announced in a March 25 post - long enough for people to forget about the exact date unless they were planning on participating.

+1 to the idea of event notifications with an option to toggle them off.
I wouldn't mind a PM notification for big upcoming events. Seems like a good idea as long as you can turn them off.

I understand the frustration, but I simply do not understand how you can possibly miss the event bar to the left, it was there 24 hours before the event started.
I wouldn't mind push notifications in the mobile app for important lichess events as well. (opt-in)

For now I would recommend the twitch app and following www.twitch.tv/maskenissen
and enable notifications.
That saved my day.

"Hang on the world champ is streaming!!!"

As he really does not go live very often chances are it will be in about one month again. =)

+1 #18.
To the OP...

The bar on the left tells you everything important or big that is going on or will happen now/in few mins/hours.
Each square is even highlighted in blue and is way bigger than normal notifications you have mentioned.

On top of that you can also see all the players that are streaming whether their matches or others'. You can also just put your mouse on one to read the title of the stream. You don't have to actually open it the link.

For the Titled Arena 4 the blue square has been up for over 24 hours. The official stream by IM Eric Rosen started way before the beginning of the tournament and that was also highlighted in a square with a microphone inside.

From the right side of your screen you can see who of your friends is online and playing. I think that if you really don't wanna miss the world champion play, then you follow him for sure. Then it means you could just check if he was online. As well as all the other famous GMs or famous titled Lichess players who played the previous Titled Arenas.

You see all these things are pretty easy to check. You are claiming it is lichess fault if you missed this event. I don't see how in the world this could be someone else's fault if not yours. It's not even anybody's fault, it is just your forgetfulness.

Titled players who had requested to join, had been warned before. Normal members have all those kinds of warnings in the homepage. There is not a few I would say...

So lichess didn't have absolutely the need or the duty to send you anything in the first place, then if the devs want to implement it, it will be even more clear and great for everybody, but they don't have to feel pressed for this because in my opinion they have already made a lot to sponsor the event and make it accessible to everyone.

Your post and claim would make sense if lichess had announced or it was its feature already to send a notification to people for the event and they didn't send it. But as how things actually are, your post is ridiculous.
And you should learn some manner as well. This is not the right way to express your disappointment nor to suggest something.
