A good alternative is imgrush.com/ if imgur is down.

Also #29, bandwidth is only used up once. Your browser caches it afterwards. So it's not like it's loaded on every page you go on. But yeah, that's normally the rationale behind blocking the practice of hotlinking.

I haven't seen the background that Chessbrah uses lately, but in order to get your own custom backgrounds, click on the Theming button at the top-right of your screen, select the custom theme option and then simply paste the URL of the image you want into the box.

This image should explains what you need to do .

If you want to upload an image from your own hard-drive as a custom background on to lichess you need to first upload the image onto the web using a site like imgur.com (its free) and then paste the URL of the uploaded image.
