Caro Kann vs the French

@SrikaraSoulOfTal - I think there is a good case to present the French as one of the most directly aggressive defenses that Black can opt for. You directly stake a claim to challenge White's center and must play actively to counter attack the central pawn chain and on the queenside or else White will walk all over you. Lines like the Winawer and McCutheon are among the sharpest in all of chess. Black has excellent prospects for a win, and even in the "dull" exchange lines there are ideas for how to mix it up if you're looking for a fight.

I fully agree, the opening does not matter at all. You do not lose games in the opening, it is usually in the middlegame and because of some tactic.

However one can ask the question from a theoretical point of view. If you were to play a 3 days / move correspondence game then what would you play after 1 e4? You live with the consequences for a year's duration of the game. If you were to advice Carlsen on what to play on 1 e4 in his next classical World Championship match, then what would you recommend?
