you are right, initially it was mate in 8 moves but the opponent blundered one move (g6) and accelerated the mate
He just had to take that B instead doing the perpetual.
After 33. ...Qxe2, it was a forced mate in 7. But if Black had played 33. ...Qg3+, he/she could have had a draw by repetition.

true, I was lucky that he didn't do a forced repetition

Maybe he didn't want a draw but didn't see this forced mate
yeah obviously he didnt see it, we all make mistakes. personally i think that only few 19xx would take the risk here with e6 blocked. its not easy to calculate, but it smells really fishy with the rook sitting in the corner chilling. you just gotta assume something will be wrong (if its not mate you might trade rook for B as the downward escape path is blocked).
