Not physically strenuous enough. It's not a sport, it's a game. If you want to call chess a sport because it takes stamina and brainpower then you would be calling stuff like league of legends a sport too, but obviously, league isn't a sport.
During the Fischer/Spassky match in 1972..."Sports Illustrated" magazine had extensive coverage of Fischer and the match. I would say that chess is a "mind sport"... It does pay to be in good physical condition for chess competition ...Fischer liked to swim and bowl. :]

game does not seem like a right word either, its too intellectual to be just a game, its a fight of logic, a logical fight something like that but thats more than one word, a mind battle , dont know
I think its hard to define chess because its quite a unique game
even its different than checkers, the concept, of tactics, sacrificies, checkmate, initiative, tempo, opposition there are other concepts like imbalance, its more than a game, but still the word game, its quite casual like playing with a balloon whereas chess is very scientific rigurous and demanding to be just a game, its almost like a microscope rather than a game.

I am not playing much chess now but if I play chess I think my physical concentration awareness of my own body improves,
this is hard to explain it looks like pseudoscience but maybe one develops a better intuition of coordination even for the limbs of the body do things like handstands gymnastics, mental sport may be right but I am not completely sure, the fact its that if u just do chess u get bad health, mental sport seems right I guess

Sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion...Chess must be a sport, because We all vigorously exercise our glutenous maxis mas on a regular basis. Some the most grueling chess games have been won by the player with the best buttocks . :]
