How do I stop potatoing games like this?

I have him on the run, my rook harassing him and nomming up his pawns, when I potato and he yoinks my rook. How did it go from a +60 game to a #-13? And HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT?
I will call it "overconfidence" or "sleepy mode" ^^

what i am saying is that you are not bragging and feeling superior in a bad way it is just that you know it is won and you relax but at some point your opponent kept pieces on the board and tried to counter attack.

In the endgame you should shut him every counter play. The best way is to exchange pieces when you know that you are ahead in a completely winning endgame !

Move 26 you went for the endgame that seems favorable but not winning IMO. i would have played f3 with the idea of d1 or directly c1. My point is the black king is still weak so you could have tried to mate him or if he defends perfectly to win one or 2 more pawns then exchanging queens and rooks

At move 28 you are ahead in term of tempo but it is not completely winning IMO

29 excellent ! I would play as black C5 and looking for a counter play !!! instead of f6

He wants to defend your pawn majority then perhaps doing a counter attack but move 31 to me is a huge mistake ! You can exchange rooks and win easily with Re1 + !!

It is a that moment that you need to close the game and chill. It is a won because you will push your pawns via f4 g5 with fxg5 fxg5 so his king will have to hold 3 passed pawns and with your king you have 2 plans: ignoring his pawns and advancing your king to promote one of your pawn into queen or going to c4 with your king and a pawn in a4 to stop his majority and with 3 pawns against one king it should be winning easily in the king side !

Anyway his king would be blocked against 3 pawns, you put your king in the middle and see which plan is better by calculation

45 you take the pawn over

When you are in a complete domination in a winning endgame do not try to win some slight tempi .... just play simple chess. Take the pawn or exchange pieces to go in a winning endgame.

On the contrary when it is a closed endgame you should try to in tempi and improve step by step your position
The real answer @Slugy:

1. Put on dragon armor.
2. Nade when he starts to rez.
3. Never underestimate a fart.
4. If life gives you potatoes, make french fries.

GL!
"when I potato and he yoinks my rook"

I hate when that happens
You were low on time.
Why did you spend 40.8 seconds on the obvious 25 Rxd8+?
What other move were you considering?
I'd probably check out some strategy books and do some tactical training if I were you. Weapons of Chess helped me loads as a beginner.. it's more of a general concept book.. easier to understand and gets your foundation going. Logical Chess: Move by Move by Chernev is awesome as well, giving laymen explanations to every single move in a game of chess (which is what I definitely needed as I never had any coaches). Tactical training is crucial as well.. really helps build your board awareness so you don't make those kinds of mistakes (as often). Also at the mental level overconfidence is a thing as said before.. it's never over until it's over.. chess is a game full of last-ditch tactics and cheapo's, you gotta stay alert at all times (especially of what your opponent is up to) and never fixate on your own plans. Good luck~
