Fischer was slightly better in his prime, but Kasparov remained the best over a longer period, so I'd say Kasparov.

Without Fischer the professional chess scene we have nowadays would'nt even exist and we wouldn't be able to witness such great games by great player as we have today.

Fischer didn't have a team of 20+ grandmasters doing analysis with supercomputers for him. Make of that what you will.

I prefer Kasparov because he was my chess teacher.
