As we have democracy and freedom of word here, let me finish this discussion on a simple statement that I thoroughly disagree with your point. It is just opposite to what I am saying: russian people are of course absolutely and completely in charge of what their country is doing, and should take a full suffer from sanctions as well.

Well, I guess I won't convince you to truth. Good day/night.

I agree with @TroutHunter!
Like Hitler overrunned Poland to "protect" people with german roots so does Putin start his completely unjustified war against innocent people in Ukraine. Sweeping punishment is always a critical and imperfect action against crime and brutality, but who takes care of those millions of innocent people in Ukraine - men, women and children - who will be killed and suppressed by Russian aggression? A few thousands chessplayer in lichess cannot be hurt as much as Ukrainian families now, but these Russian chessplayers can learn to observe their corrupt government and start thinking about actions against Putin and his minions instead of playing chess. It's time to stop the stupidity and criminiality of dictators, fascists and other extremists.
Lichess will - I guess - argue, to be a neutral and non-political chess platform, but if we always hide in our comfortable corners of being unconcerned and impartial, there will be no change on this planet and the crime and violence will go one forever.

Thinking that the average Russian "are in charge" when it's a literal authoritarian state. You have abosultely no idea dude. The thousands of russians protesting would beg to differ. Here is a Russian persons' view on this youtube.com /watch?v=4oULSBdQb-U

> As an act of solidarity with Ukraine and as a symbolic protest against an ILLEGAL WAR and the killing of innocent Ukrainians by the Russian state - I suggest Lichess ban all Russian accounts.
> Discussion.
> We all know how chess is historically important to Russians. No, I do not think if this is carried through it will cause the end of this war or stop the Russian government. But I do know the Russian people are being fed endless propaganda and lies about the actions and motivations for this needless war. This would be one way to send a message to ordinary Russians bypassing government propaganda.

> Maybe instead of a banning of Russian players - every time a Russian player starts a game - A nag screen appears with an Anti-war message.
You are canadian, you cannot blame the russians while Fidel Castro's son is beating and stealing people in your country
What about banning every canadian or auto-message "stop tyranny" everytime a canadian starts a game???

What a ridiculous proposition! How is there even 3 pages of discussion on this? Nonsense.
Definitely Lichess should ban french players because they eat frogs and snails.

> sanctions should only be put on influential oligarchs and the government of Russia. Simply destroying some Russian people's lives is not the way to get through this war correctly.
i agree with that sentiment. russia is destroying ukranian people's lifes. quite literally, they're dying. still, we should not destroy russian people's lifes in retaliation. fortunately, kicking them off a chess site won't destroy their life. so let's do that.
