FIDE

FIDE has three different ratins. Blitz (typicallly 5 min or 3/2). Rapid 15/10 in wc. And classic whihchminimun time is 60 minutes BUT to be rated tournament must in practice have at least 2h. Most common time limit are 90/30 and 90/30 + 30min after 40th move
I see, so most of the time it is with increment, this is already biased when you play many blitz games without it like in many lichess tournaments. I assume not many players online would play more than 1 or 2 hours for a game. So I agree it is hard to compare the ratings.
Well, lichess "classical" has similar time controls as OTB rapid. The motivation is also different compared to, for example, a league OTB game, where one really has to avoid losing because one's team needs the points. Online chess is much lighter, people play different kind of openings and take much more risks.

I have no problems playing on the net after a couple of beers, but I'd never do that in a tournament or a league match. If I play several games with the same person here I might change the Queen's Gambit to the King's Gambit just for the variety.

While I think Lichess is a wonderful site, OTB or serious correspondence chess is something altogether different at least for some players.
But is correspondence considered "real" chess compared to real time? I mean is there a world champion and an official competition? It does not seem very popular although it is interesting not to lose because of time trouble unless you simply forgot to play your move...

I prefer correspondence over classical online because you can always have something else to do which just comes up, or with a long classical games you could just lose on time because your internet stopped working during 20 minutes for some reason after 3 hours of play... And otherwise blitz is fun and I like the fact that the category rapid was created when we want to play with a bit more time to think without having hours to spend.
Thank you for the links gbtami. Do you know if sometimes correspondence world champion and classical world champion organize match together? Like 5 correspondence games and then 5 classical games or something? I wonder if Magnus Carlsen would defeat in correspondence the best correspondence players. I assume the correspondence players could not win the real time games, but it would be interesting to see.
Interesting, I think I would be stronger if I have more time and motivation (like in OTB). That means my lichess rating would be instead less my OTB rating lol.

PS: for example, when I was decided beat some engine to show 'how smart I am' for my friends I was able beat some engines like gnuchess or crafity and that engines are strong, maybe 2300... but my online rating was just 1600 on FICS (in that time). My idea is: long time, better chess, why say OTB is low than blitz?
@Demonolith correspondence chess is next to perfection. The players use stockfish for raw calculation, but decide which strategy to use. Kalashnikov/Sveshnikov, for example, which Carlsen are using now, is known as 'best defense' for black in correspondence chess! In correspondence chess any advantage is enough to win, there are no blunder, no tired players, no misscalculated variation (use stockfish to calculate is common). That means strong strategy is the main point, tactics is not a issue! Many games Carlsen win he would dont win if his opponents would think for a long time!

Maybe Carlsen would be strong in correspondence chess, I dont know, but in correspondence chess we are talking more about science than sport! It is something for 'nerds', no psychological tricks are possible.

"Aleksandr Surenovich Dronov is a Russian International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster. He is most famous for being the 22nd, 27th, and 29th World Correspondence Chess Champion.[1][2][3] He is the only person to win the World Correspondence Chess Championship three times. "

<-- that guy is a 72 years old! That show 'age' in correspondence chess is not a issue, which means Carlsen "mental stamina" dont apply in that modality.

We can to say correspondence chess players can beat stockfish, because it is allowed use stockfish which means that is more about 'who know use stockfish better?'...
I believe the same as you, will_is_myth, but at the same time I think it is more (physically and mentally) exhausting and stressing to play, so you have to be very careful not to make calculation mistakes. I tend to think that sometimes I might overthink and actually not play the best move because I would want to calculate too many lines before playing it and hesistate too much even if my intuition was correct.

I think also it is more motivating to play strong opponents. When I play a titled player on lichess, if I do not play a too bad opening, I often play stronger than usual. But I rarely defeat them so congratulations if you defeated a engine with 2300 rating just for the show!
