Isn't this a stalemate in monster chess? If the king captures any of the pieces, a1 will be attacked so it can't just return. lichess.org/analysis/r3k2b/8/8/8/2q5/8/nn6/Kn5r_w_-_-

However, since it is White to move, what was Blacks last move?
By my observation, White had to have been in check, making the position an illegal one, as by returning to a1 on the previous move would have been check.

Excellent example. I could be mistaken about the possibility of stalemate, it's such an unlikely scenario.

Monster chess is quite entertaining. I hope a developer takes interest.

@mdinnerspace Black just played Bxh8, and white had played Nh8 before that. White's king has been here for a while and black built the fortress around it.

So indeed! Anything is possible in chess with help mates and help stalemates. Cool. A solution was found quite quickly. I don't mind being set straight. Monster chess players assumed a stalemate could not occur, but the example given is a refutation!
