One thing chess.com does better is the social side of their site. I'm not saying Lichess should necessarily go down that route (chess should be the main focus). But it would be nice to have features to encourage more interaction amongst users. Improving clubs, implementing vote chess and team matches could help. Not sure I like the idea of a big chat room but it could be fun.
Huge work for moderation, but that's a very nice dream.

This is how it should be. Lichess has always been minimal. Please don't add a global spam box, I mean chat box, there's no point.

Global chat would open many more possibilities.
For example team tournaments - you can create channels for your teams and talk there.

#14 lichess is far from a minimal place to play chess and nothing else. How many useless variants are we up to now? 8?
A place to chat that you can just close out of if you aren't interested wouldn't hurt anything. And if the lichess discord is already being moderated without issue, there shouldn't be much of an issue with that either. There would be plenty of volunteers to compensate for the scale.

Well, as long as you play variants you don’t become better at chess. Please all, keep on practicing weird variants. Invent even more, go ahead; the far away from chess, the better. Racing Kinks makes a good start.

I love variants, and I'm pretty decent at chess. Tbf, people who play regular chess well, in general like variants.
