> In conversations with Helgi Ólafsson, Bobby Fischer discussed the initiative that renamed the variant "Chess960" and remarked, "They believe my image is so bad that they have given it another name." Fischer later expressed that he liked the name "Chess960" and sometimes used the name
From Ólafsson, Helgi (2014). Bobby Fischer Comes Home: The Final Years in Iceland, a Saga of Friendship and Lost Illusions.
According to wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess960#Naming.
In practice the real name is too long and not used as much as chess960.

You liking one of the names most does not make it (the only) "correct" or "real".

The guy who created (Fischer) has the right to choose whatever name he wants to give it. "Chess960" was given by someone who has no legitimacy or authority whatsoever. Basically that alternative was accepted because Bobby was a genuine person and people don't like his personality and opinions because it hurts their feelings. Had Magnus Carlsen created it, everybody would be glad to call it "Magnus Chess" or something like that... the only problem is that Fischer created it, so that's why they wanna change it.

Somebody is a Big Fischer fan!
Shouldn't this be posted in FIDE Feedback instead?

That's not how the world works.

Sure, I have been reading nothing but praise on Magnus Carlsen everywhere for the last week. :-)

I really like the name Chess960. It is concise and meaningful.
But Fischer Random would still be better than inventing new brand-based names like 9LX or Freestyle around it.
I think very few things today are called after their inventors. Chess openings probably being a notable exception (and yes, some particles or stars as well...).
You drive a car, not a Benz Mobile, you use your phone, not a Bell Thingy, you don't play lichess on your Jobs Bell.

I emailed Bobby Fischer and he said it was ok for us to call it Chess 960, he doesn't mind.

What about sub-atomic particles, chemical and physical phenomena, measurement units, human organs, etc., which received the names of the researchers who discovered them? again, no one refutes the fact that Bobby was the one who created FRC and therefore it is his legitimate right to choose the name he wants to give it and no one has the right to appropriate it. If Magnus had created the game and wanted to name it after himself, everyone would call it “Magnus Chess” without hesitation or question. The problem is that people who don't like Bobby are happy to see the credit taken from him (of course none of you will admit that and you know it is the truth).
