I personally prefer to play opponents that are rated higher than me or close to me, but I do notice some people are more interested in winning and therefore play lower rated players and some even only play white.
Actually it is not so. On the contrary the players want to play with equal opponents. Test. Use the filter of the game. Try to cause the game player rating of 2000 and above. Your challenge in the system will hang for 3-5 minutes. My current rating is 1800. And if I want to play with strong players to have to wait. But it is very useful to play with strong players.
